Kochi, 04th Feb 2025: Minister for Local Self-Governments M.B. Rajesh has lauded the state-of-the-art biodegradable waste processing facility established by Fabbco Biocycle in Brahmapuram, calling it a model initiative that can be replicated to address Kerala’s urban waste management challenges. The minister made these remarks while visiting the facility, which employs Black Soldier Fly (BSF) technology to convert biowaste into protein-rich products.

The Black Soldier Fly-based waste treatment model is a novel approach in biowaste management, facilitating rapid and efficient waste decomposition. Minister Rajesh highlighted that a delegatioyn from Dubai had recently visited the site and was considering adopting the same model for implementation. “It is a matter of pride that Kerala is spearheading such innovative waste management technologies, inspiring adoption in global cities like Dubai and Singapore,” he said. He further noted that similar projects would be introduced across various locations in Kerala.

Fabbco Biocycle’s Brahmapuram facility, set up within four months, has the capacity to process 50 tonnes of organic waste daily. Since its inception, the plant has successfully treated 12,000 tonnes of waste using Black Soldier Fly larvae, converting it into a nutrient-rich value-added product. Additionally, the facility produces frass, an organic fertiliser derived from the waste processing cycle. This method, which enables the handling of large quantities of waste in minimal time, marks a pioneering effort in India, with no comparable facility currently operating on such a scale.

Accompanying the minister during his visit were Kochi Mayor Adv. M. Anilkumar, Vadavucode-Puthencruz Panchayat President Sonia Murukesan, and Fabbco Biocycle directors P.V. Niayas and P.A. Latheef.
